2006 - Egypt, Israel - Day 2

Our first stop was at the Pyramids of Giza. We saw the boat that they found in the pyramid and we took a camel ride in the sand. We then went to a papyrus store. We then ate lunch at a restaurant along the Nile and then went to the Alabaster mosque. Afterwards we had a sacrament meeting at the hotel and then went back to the airport and flew to Luxor.

We drove to the west bank of the Nile and saw the Valley of the Kings. We saw King Tut’s tomb and coffin with his mummy inside. We went in tombs of Rameses’s the 4th, 9th, and 3rd. We drove by Hatsepsut’s temple. We saw tomb 33 where Joseph Smith’s papyrus’s was thought to be found. Then we went to the funeral temple of Rameses’s the 2nd. Afterwards we stopped at an Alabastar shop. We then came back to the hotel for lunch and Don talked to us about the Egyptian endowment. That afternoon we went on a sailboat ride on the Nile. We came back to the hotel for dinner and then we walked to the bazaar for some shopping.

This morning we went to the temple of Karnak. Then to the temple of Luxor. After Luxor we went back to the hotel for lunch where we had a couple of hours of free time. We went back to the airport and flew back to Cairo.

Today we drove to Memphis. We stopped at a small museum and saw a statue of Rameses the 2nd. We then drove to the Saqqara Valley and saw the Step Pyramid. We also went to a pit tomb and walked down into the ground and crawled through tunnels to find an empty sarcophagus. Mark climbed in and we got pictures! We then went to a carpet store and watch how they were made. We then stopped at a nearby restaurant for lunch. We drove back to Cairo and went to the Cairo museum. We saw King Tut’s treasures and the mummy room. After the museum we went to a huge bazaar called Kahn el Kalili.

Today we drove down the Sinai peninsula. We stopped at the monument to Anwar Sadat. We arrived at our Morganland hotel that afternoon.

We got up at 1am to trek up Mt. Sinai. We then crossed the border into Israel and went to the marine observatory in Elait.

We went to Masada and then we went to the Dead Sea for a salt bath. Afterwards we drove into Jericho and stopped at a glass store. We saw some ruins of an old tower from 2000 BC and the Mt. of Temptation. We also saw the supposed tree that Zaccheus climbed to see Jesus. We then drove up to Galilee.

We drove up Golan Heights and stopped at a bunker hill for a great view of Mt. Hermon. We then drove on to the site of Ceasarea Phillipi. We then ate lunch in the area and had a lunch of falafels. We then drove to Teldan and walked along the nature trails to view the headwaters of the River Jordan. We saw the high place of Dan which was an area of Pagan temples. We also saw the Cannanite Gate to the city of the time of Abraham. We then drove into Tiberias to see a film called the Galilee Experience.

Today we went to Capernaum. We then drove on to Nazareth. We had lunch in Nazareth. We then drove to the Mt. of Beattitudes. Our next stop was Peter’s Primacy Church which is the traditional spot of where Jesus asked Peter threes time if he loved him and to feed his sheep. We took a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee. We ended up back at Ein Gev at a fish restaurant where everyone had St. Peter’s fish for dinner (except Cathy.)

Went to the traditional site on the River Jordan where they do baptisms. Drove on to Mt. Tabor and took taxi’s to the top. We then stopped at Megiddo and saw the ruins of twenty-five different cities. Afterwards we drove to Beth Shean and had lunch. We saw some ruins of the city there. Up on the hill were the ruins of an Old Testament city where they hung King Saul and Jonathan. We then went to Gan Hashlosha. We went swimming at the natural hot springs there. Back at our hotel, many of us went swimming in the Sea of Galilee.

Our first stop today was in Haifa. Stopped at a scenic overlook, overlooking Haifa Bay. We then stopped at Baiha Gardens and then drove up Mt. Carmel. We had lunch in the Druze village on the Mt. We then stopped at Caesarea. We saw the aqua ducts built by Herod and walked through the ruins of the city. We then drove into Jerusalem.

Went to the excavations at the Holy Mount. We saw the road and steps the Savior would have walked on. We then went into Bethlehem and saw the church of the Nativity which is the traditional spot where Jesus was born. We then drove to Shepherds Field. After lunch we went to the Jerusalem Center and then to Golgotha and the garden tomb.

We went to the Yad Vasham Museum. We then went to the Israeli Museum. We then went to Hezekiah’s Tunnel. We also went to a folk dance that evening.

We went to the Holy Mount and walked around the Dome of the Rock and El Aksa Mosque. We then walked to the Western Wall and watched some bar mitzvah’s. Afterwards, we went to the Citadel Museum. We walked to the church of the holy sepulcher where the traditional burial and crucifixion took place. We then walked to Jaffa Gate and did some shopping.

We began this day at the Upper Room. We then went to St. Peter in Gallicantu which is the possible site of the Palace of Caiaphas where Jesus was tried by Herod and also where Peter denied Christ. We walked into a dungeon and flogging room from the first century. The steps leading up to the palace were 2000 years old and would have been where Jesus would have walked up. We then went to Gethsemane. We walked through Lions Gate down Via Dolorosa. This is supposedly the path Jesus walked to his crucifixion. We went to St. Anne’s monastery. We walked out of Damascus Gate from the old city to Golgotha and the Garden Tomb.
